[She has absolutely no idea how she wound up in this position -- but, then again, she does. She knows precisely why she is sitting in the corner of a cell, staring at the wall adjascent from her, ignoring those that talk to her and finding some kind of solace inside her own head.
Katniss Everdeen. The Mockingjay.
Hours, days, weeks, months -- Effie has since lost track of how long they've been torturing her for information. A bit useless, really, seeing as she knows nothing -- and she told them that, upon her arrest, expecting to be released that day. But while Effie Trinket is a Capitol woman, she is not stupid.
She knows what happens when people get arrested.
It's just a matter of how they're going to do it.
Peeta's team was executed on public television, which she was forced to watch. She could hear Peeta screaming as they hijacked his head, and while she begged, pleaded, cried and sobbed, it did no good.
Effie knows nothing because they told her nothing. They hadn't trusted her with the information of revolution because they suspected she would either rat them out or crack under pressure.
She's either going to be executed or starve to death. Either way, the result is the same, and so now, instead of panicking, instead of feeling upset -- instead of fearing for her life, Effie simply waits.
So when she hears the cell doors open again, she speaks quietly, eyes fixated on the wall in front of her. Emaciated, thin, scarred.]
If I am going to be shot, I would prefer it not on camera.
[Her voice is soft, trembling, but her Capitol accent still enunciates every single word.]
That's the first time I've ever heard you refuse to be on camera.
[The man in the cell door (thinner than she'd remember him being), stares at her with a heavy-hearted look that's somewhere between guilt and relief. A few rebels are hovering in the background, looking for an excuse to use their rifles. Haymotch bares his teeth in a snarl and looks over his shoulder.]
You heard Coin. Get the hell out. [They hesitate and then scatter and Haymitch is left alone in the doorway, staring at this woman who is still Effie Trinket, no matter what they took from her.]
[She looks up sharply at the voice -- an odd jolt as Effie immediately pushes herself up a bit straighter with her hands -- and the sudden intake of breath is so sharp that her chest rattles.
Haymitch.
[It's said quietly, almost in disbelief -- faint.]
What do you think I'm doing here? Getting you out.
[It's still dry and acerbic, but mostly tired. It's been a long hard fight to even get this far- and he's not even just talking about the war. Yelling for hours at Coin and her army to demand she not execute an innocent woman was a trying experience. He's on watch now- Coin'll be President and probably show more gumption than Snow ever did and have him killed.
Any smart dictator would have Haymitch Abernathy killed on sight, to be honest. It's a fact he knows and he's prepared for, but by then, Effie will be sequestered somewhere and Katniss and Peeta will be safe.
Or maybe his last plan will work.]
Unless you want to stay here. Wouldn't blame you- it's a mess out there. [He leans on the door a bit, expression neutral.]
Effie just stares at him, a bit dumbfounded, not quite processing what Haymitch is saying. Let her go? She's not going to be executed? After nearly a year being trapped in the Capitol, being tortured and forced to watch her friends die, they're going to just... Let her go.]

Where is Katniss?
[It's asked quietly, avoiding his eyes.]
-- Is Peeta alive?
