[It's been a few days since the Frog came back from Westeros. Nico's still sore from her alternate universe relative's torture, which was hella not worth it, even if it did trick her staff out something fierce. The new base in Malibu is great and all, but she's spent- emotionally and physically.
And the new girl probably hasn't taken to the sand and the sun as much as Molly would have liked. She skittered off somewhere, leaving Nico to hunt her down. Princesses in Malibu are normal, but maybe not this kind of princess.
She pokes her head inside the little poolhouse out back, praying she didn't wander away from the damn house.]
[Sansa is sitting by the water, skirts pushed aside so she can dip her feet in the water. The indoor pool is strange, and the water tastes and feels... strange, but it's nice in the heat. When Nico comes in, she hurries to her feet.]
My lady-- I mean... Nico. [Not using honorifics is strange, though considering none of these people are truly highborn, they aren't really appropriate. Not spending time around highborns is strange too.]
[Nico flinches at the my lady, but at least Sansa's learning. She can't really fault her being who she is- they're all a strange little mixed up group.]
Yeah, Molly said you wandered off. Sorry about her, by the way. She's a sweet kid, but she's not used to having someone her own age and you're...
[She doesn't know what to say there, so she pauses awkwardly- Molly's mature for a kid her age, so that's not the right word.] ...worldlier than her?
[Sansa hasn't seen Arya in years, and probably won't again, even on the very slim chance Arya still survives. But Arya would have liked Mollly, who's so loud and energetic and though she likes Sansa's dresses, she wears trousers like a boy herself.]
I didn't mean to worry her. I simply wished to... to think.
[Being able to be alone in places other than the Godswood is a pleasure she's been denied for a long time. She relishes it now, though her new companions are kind enough.]
[Nico sits down beside her and begins pulling off her boots and rolling up her skirt a bit.]
You're the only one of us that even has family, you know. Had. [Had, because the situation in Westeros was awful and there was no guaranteeing anything.] Secretly, I think we're all kinda jealous. We might be all alone in the world, but you're the one who has something to miss. And sometimes I think that would be better than all this... anger and betrayal I feel. We. We feel. [She touches her chest instinctively, reminded of her staff- her family's legacy that she's trying to make less tainted.]
[Sansa looks over at her, expression inscrutable. It's been a long time since she allowed her emotions to display so easily.]
My mother and brother were murdered by our bannermen and allies at a wedding. The king I was to marry executed my father after promising mercy. My younger brothers were barely old enough to ride when our foster-brother murdered them. I don't know where Arya is now, but I very much doubt she lived more than a day or two past my father. [She looks down. Her expression is pretty clear now. Despair. She hasn't been able to really grieve while in King's Landing and pretending she thought her family was traitors. She doesn't even know if it's safe to now. This new world is so different that part of her fears it's just a matter of time before it's snatched away.]
All that's left is me and my bastard brother and more than enough anger and betrayal to flood king's landing in blood if I had the means. I've no family left to be jealous of.
[The aftermath of Xavin leaving with the Majesdanians left a mark on the team, but unlike the scatter spell Nico's still kicking herself over, that mark brought them closer.
After everything cruel she ever said to Xavin... who would have thought she'd actually miss her this much?
But, she thinks to herself, it might not be Xavin she's missing. As much as the skrull got under her skin and made her protective instincts towards Karolina kick into overdrive, she had loved Karolina and Karolina loved her. And she knows a few things about losing people she loves.
This was a much more heroic ending to a tragic love story than she ever got with Alex. It hurts, but Karolina didn't deserve to have it end that way, so it's more bittersweet that truly tragic. But it doesn't change the fact- Xavin is gone. Xavin might not ever come back.
And they're down one more runaway.
She raps on Karolina's door and rests her forehead against it. She can't sleep and she knows Karolina won't be either after this.] It's just me, Karolina.
