The others were supposed to come back for me. Then my swim wouldn't have mattered.

[Which is true, but also not all of the truth. He'd known it was a risk. The safest thing would have been to get the hell off the island as soon as possible. Shove Hurley out, maybe. That would have bought them more time than just Sawyer.
